How to spec a Vidmar workbench

Two decisions matter: frame and worksurface.

Vidmar benching is modular. A straight workbench pairs a worksurface with bench legs and one or two bench-height drawer cabinets underneath; a corner workbench turns the worksurface 90° so drawer storage is never more than an arm's length away, in clusters configured face-to-face, back-to-back, or side-by-side. Disassembly is simple, the bench moves with the cabinets loaded, and you can always add to a modular bench when expansion becomes necessary.

Worksurface:

• Hardwood (1¾″) is the right answer for mechanical work: tough, repairable, takes a hit without denting the underlying steel. Doesn't love long-term oil or solvent exposure.
• Plastic laminate (1½″) is the right answer for clean assembly, inspection, kitting, and electronics work. Wipes clean. Easier on calibrated instruments.
• Static-dissipative (ESD) laminate (1¾″, bullnose) for any work touching sensitive electronics, boards, or aerospace avionics.
• Stainless steel or steel plate for washdown areas, welding-adjacent work, and labs.

Length is typically 60″, 72″, or 84″. Pick the shorter bench if you're tight on floor; pick the longer bench if you'll have two technicians side-by-side, or if you'll mount a vise on one end and still need usable surface.

Need integrated storage under the worksurface? Add a bench-height modular cabinet under one end, it pulls out for service, and any divider, partition, or bin fits the same drawers.
